We recently held our 43rd Annual Meeting and I wanted to update you on our election and other activities for the evening.

The meeting was held at the Hardin County Armory on Saturday, March 24th. Dinner was served by the Plaza Inn of Mt. Victory and was enjoyed by all. Nominating Chair Allen Barrett gave a summation of our 2012 election and the results are as follows; Richard Wilcox and Jim Ramge were re-elected to the board for 3 year terms and John Gunn was re-elected to the credit committee for a 3 year term also. Following many months of discussion about the future of our Board and how we can successfully transition to trained board members as the years fly by, the Board voted unanimously to expand our roster from 7 to 9 as well as adding 2 more members to our Supervisory Committee, taking the total from 3 to 4 members. I am pleased to introduce Sarah Wirbel and Brian Sprang as our new board members and Connie Oates and Karen Streetman as our new supervisory members.

Sarah is a self-employed salon owner who joins the board after serving on supervisory for the past 6 years. Brian works in software development and comes to the board with a unique insight on technology and how that can be leveraged to create a better member experience. Connie is a tax accountant who owns her own business. She retired as Secretary of the Hardin County Fairboard where Connie diligently supported and promoted our credit union over the years. Karen is a former employee who served as the member Service Supervisor at our Bellefontaine Branch and brings hands on experience to the supervisory committee as someone who has applied the audit requirements in her daily work.

Other highlights of 2011 were reviewed as well as a few initiatives for 2012. We have completed a “facelift” of our Bellefontaine Branch and the results are amazing, truly a great job and a beautiful facility for our members to enjoy. Thank you to Lewis Construction of Huntsville, Joe Roberts Flooring, Jamie Johns Electric and Midwest Millwork for their timeliness, attention to detail and willingness to work around our office schedule. Another item discussed was our future expansion to Indian Lake which is projected for 2014 or 2015 depending upon our credit union performance and the broader economy, more to come on this topic later. Matt Jennings, our CEO gave a summary of financial conditions as well as a short explanation of different ratios and calculations that we use in our daily operations and how these financial indicators affect you as a member. Annual reports are available upon request or feel free to call or stop in and talk to Matt; he is always willing to spend time with members and enjoys having these conversations with members that are interested in learning more.

Thank you for taking the time to catch up on what’s happening with YOUR credit union and I will be sure to keep you updated periodically about our financial strength and stability and any new products or services that may be coming your way. Thank you for your continued patronage and we wish you and your families a healthy and successful 2012! Quest Federal Credit Union – Explore the Possibilities.

Dick Wilcox
President – Board of Directors

If you use our “It’s Me 247 Online Banking”, you know that there are security controls in place such as using a complex password and security questions. These security controls weren’t put in place to inconvenience you, but to inconvenience a hacker who would like to steal your banking information. Here are some tips to improve your password strength and make it challenging for someone to get your account information.

More characters. The longer, more complex the password, the harder it is for a hacker to figure out. Use both capital and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols when creating your password. Use the symbols in place of letters, for example: p@sswo2D. Another good way to set passwords is by a sentence you will remember, such as “April showers bring May flowers”. You could make your password: @pri!s8mF.

Don’t use personal information as part of a password. Using a spouse or child’s name as a password is not secure. Think Facebook for example, how many times do you use your family’s names while posting? It’s not much work for a hacker to do a little research on the internet to find out any of your personal information. Birthdates are another password to stay away from.

Change your passwords. Don’t use the same password for each website. That protects you if one site’s password gets compromised then your other passwords are safe. Change those passwords at least annually or more often if you feel comfortable doing so.

Create opposite answers to security questions. If one of the questions is, “What is your favorite food?”, and the obvious answer is chocolate, but you hate coconut, then make the correct answer coconut. You’ll know what the correct answer is but someone trying to hack into your account will try chocolate (since they saw you posting on Facebook how much you love chocolate).

Think you have a good password? Use Microsoft’s password checker to see https://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/password-checker.aspx Of course, the opinion of secure passwords vary from site to site, but I tested a few with this site and it liked them better the more complex they were.

Another way you can protect your online account is by using the PIB profile that is available to you through your “It’s Me 247 Online Banking”. PIB stands for Personal Internet Branch, and that’s exactly what it is. PIB allows you to set up your online account how you want it. It allows you to restrict times that the account can be accessed, allows you to require a confirmation password to make transactions and more. You set up your PIB so you can control the features you want to use and the ones you do not. Your PIB can be changed anytime you want so if you want to add or change the features you are using, you can! The PIB profile allows you to add another layer of security to your online account.

This is not to say that if you have a complex password it will never be cracked, but the more complex you make your passwords and sign on information, the more work someone has to do to get into your account. If you are interested in setting up your PIB profile, please speak to one of our Member Service Representatives.
